Over the past few weeks, our CE2 pupils have been developing their oral reading skills as part of the “Les petits champions de la lecture” competition. This competition is designed to promote reading in a fun way, with students sharing a passage from a book with their classmates. They then completed the 4 stages of the course to prepare for the school’s grand final, and choose the winner who will represent them at the Southern and Eastern Africa Zone final.
First of all, each student was able to choose a book of his or her choice, either from books available at home or from the school library. From novels to albums to stories, everyone chose according to their tastes!
Then, from April 2 to 5, a training phase began. Students had to choose a passage from their book, and read it in 3 minutes, top time (with a tolerance threshold of plus or minus 10 seconds). Everyone was able to practice in pairs, at home, with a teacher, alone with the help of a whisperer…
The following week, from April 8 to 12, the CE2 classes organized the quarter-finals! In each class, students were divided into groups of 4 to 6 students, who were asked to read in front of the others, listen to them and rank the students they thought had read the best. So 6 students were elected from CE2A and CE2 B, and 4 from CE1/CE2. Each class then held its class final, to elect 2 finalists.
Finally, on Monday April 15, in the school auditorium, the CE2 grand final took place! Our three participating classes got together to listen to the 6 finalists, and vote to choose the student who will represent the school at the regional finals.
This year, Eyob, in the CE2 A class, was selected.
He brilliantly represented the school in the online final, which brought together CE2 candidates from 8 different countries, by reading an album about a Masai warrior. Well done to him!
