The “Whisper Phone”: A Simple Tool for More Effective Reading

At the Lycée français de Nairobi, we explore innovative methods to support our students’ development. One of these, simple yet ingenious, is the use of the “Whisper Phone,” a teaching tool that is transforming how our first-graders learn to read.

How Does It Work?

The principle is as straightforward as it is effective. The student uses a small handset, similar to an old-fashioned telephone. They place one end to their mouth and the other to their ear. When they whisper into the device, the sound is slightly amplified and sent directly back to their ear. This allows the child to hear themselves clearly without having to raise their voice.

Why Use It in the Classroom? The Educational Benefits

Using a “Whisper Phone” offers numerous advantages that create a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning:

  • Less Noise, More Focus: Since students don’t need to read aloud to hear themselves, the noise level in the classroom is significantly reduced. This creates a calm environment, which is ideal for concentration.
  • Improved Fluency and Error Correction: By hearing themselves distinctly, children can more easily spot their pronunciation errors or hesitations. This allows them to correct themselves, which builds their autonomy and improves their reading fluency.
  • A Path to Independence: This tool encourages silent and independent reading. It allows teachers to work with small groups or students who need extra help, without disrupting the rest of the class. Every child can thus progress at their own pace.

The “Whisper Phone” is an excellent example of the practical and effective approach we take to ensure that learning to read is not only successful but also an enjoyable experience for all our students.
