Through Our Origins: Learning, Sharing, Valuing

As part of Language Month, our CM1 to 6ème students enrolled in the FLE (French as a Foreign Language) program embarked on a meaningful project exploring their family origins.

Each student interviewed their parents to learn about languages spoken at home, their cultural and geographic roots, and what school was like in the past.

These discoveries were then shared in class, celebrating diversity and multilingual identity within our school community.

This project is fully aligned with the objectives of the FLE support program, which has been running at LFIDD since 2015. Led by specialized teachers, this initiative helps students who already have basic French skills but need additional oral and written language reinforcement.

  • Over the past 7 years, more than 600 students have benefited from the program, open from CP to 6ème, with no set time limit.
  • Students attend weekly sessions (about 3 hours) in small groups (max 6 students) during the school day, usually instead of English or Swahili classes, most non-French speakers being English speakers. They continue to learn these subjects in class, while the FLE sessions offer personalized, intensive language instruction.
  • This approach allows for individualized progress in an encouraging environment where students can grow in confidence and competence.

Kudos to our students and heartfelt thanks to the FLE team for their commitment and creativity!
