Science Club at LFIDD explores pollution and environmental challenges

At the Lycée Français Denis Diderot de Nairobi, the Science Club gives students the opportunity to explore scientific and environmental issues through field trips and meetings with researchers.

In December 2025, students visited Kitengela to observe urban sprawl and different forms of pollution in a suburban area. This field experience helped them better understand the environmental impact of urban development.

In February, the club travelled to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to learn how scientists measure air and water pollution. Students were able to observe mass spectrometers, advanced instruments used to analyse pollutants.

A final field trip is planned on April 2nd, again in Kitengela, to continue their observations and deepen their environmental analysis.

The Science Club is led by Bérénice Bon, a geographer at the Institut de recherche pour le développement, alongside Hélène Marquet and Joachim Laarman. Together, they guide students through hands-on scientific learning and help them better understand today’s environmental challenges.

Through initiatives like the Science Club, LFIDD encourages scientific curiosity, field-based learning and environmental awareness.
